Spring River Basin - Water Quality hr1-g.gif (391 bytes)

Historically, water that collected in mines in the Spring River Watershed was drained into area streams.  This resulted in a significant impact on the water quality of the basin.   Local industries have also discharged pollutants into area streams, resulting in high levels of nitrogen and ammonia in streams, particularly downstream from Grove Creek.  Turkey Creek receives effluent from wastewater treatment plants, industry, and mines, and is one of the most polluted streams in the region.   Short Creek has shown similar water quality issues.

Some areas of the basin have relatively good water quality.   Shoal Creek and the headwaters of the Spring River have stable biological conditions and low levels of chemicals.

Wells in the watershed are frequently contaminated.   For instance, in 1999, 70 out of 171 tested wells were determined “unsafe” due to presence of coliform bacteria.
