Spring River Basin - Point Source Pollution
Point source pollution in the Spring River
Basin comes from many different sources. Factories
and businesses release their wastewater into local streams.
Sewage treatment plants throughout the basin also release treated water into
the streams. Businesses, sewage treatment
plants, apartment complexes, and mobile home parks may have permits to release wastes into
rivers in the Spring River Basin.
Information about point and non-point pollution in the Spring River Basin
can be found at EPAs Surf Your Watershed site at:
http://cfpub.epa.gov/surf/huc.cfm?huc_code=11070207
Fish Kills
If
the water in a river is too hot or if there is not enough dissolved
oxygen, large numbers of fish can die. When large mortality
events occur, these events are called “fish kills”.
From 1979 to 1994, eighty two fish kills were investigated in the
Spring River Basin. Of these fish kills, the cause of the fish kill was
most commonly industrial and municipal waste or chemicals that entered the water.
For more fishing information visit: http://mdc.mo.gov/fish/
Permitted Point Source Discharges
Wastewater treatment plants, industries, and concentrated animal feeding operations must have a
National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit in order to release
wastewaters into receiving waters in accordance with the Clean Water Act. These permits specify pollution limits and
monitoring and reporting requirements of the facilities that are discharging wastewater.
See the table below for a list of industries in the Spring River Basin that have NPDES permits.

Facilities Involved
with Toxic Chemicals, Hazardous Wastes, Airborne Pollutants and Superfund Sites
Businesses
that use, manufacture, treat, transport, or release toxic chemicals are
listed in the EPA’s Toxic Release Inventory. Under the Resource
Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), state and federal agencies monitor
facilities that generate, treat, transport, or dispose of hazardous wastes. Facilities
that emit airborne pollutants are monitored by the EPA and/or state agencies and data is
reported by the Aerometric Information Retrieval System (AIRS).
