Spring River Basin - Drinking Water Where does our drinking water come from? Most of the water we drink comes from wells that access groundwater or from surface water (reservoirs). Who provides our drinking water? Public utility companies provide water in larger metropolitan areas. However, in smaller communities, private companies sell water to homes and businesses. How do we know our water is clean? The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has regulations that set limits on the amount of pollutants that can be in drinking water. These regulations can be found at the following link: http://www.epa.gov/safewater/sdwa/understand.pdf. The EPA also provides a listing of private drinking water providers on their website (http:\\www.epa.gov), which shows if and when these providers have violated the regulations. Below is a listing, by county, of the water systems that are currently in use in the Spring River Basin:
