Sac River Basin -
Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations

hr1-g.gif (391 bytes)

A concentrated animal feeding operation, or CAFO, is a farm where more than 1,000 animals being raised.  In the Sac River Basin, hogs and cattle are raised as part of CAFOs. Animal waste produced by a CAFO is the number one source of non-point source pollution in the Sac River Basin.   This waste can be spread on farmland as a natural fertilizer; extra waste must be hauled away to be sold or spread on other farms.   If the amount of fertilizer spread is too much for the vegetation or crops to utilize, the excess is free to run off into the streams during a rainstorm. This could cause bacteria and nutrients, like phosphorous, to enter the water. There are 41 CAFO’s in the Sac River Basin.
