James River Basin - Drinking Water

zotuvvny[1].wmf (7080 bytes) Where does our drinking water come from?  Most of the water we drink comes from wells accessing groundwater or from surface water (reservoirs).

Who provides our drinking water?  Public utility companies provide water in larger metropolitan areas. However, in smaller communities, private companies sell water to homes and businesses.

How do we know our water is clean? The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources have regulations that set limits on the levels of pollutants that can be in drinking water.  They also provide a list of private drinking water providers on their website (http:\\www.epa.gov).  For more information on the type of water system in your area (community or non-community), contact either the James River Basin Partnership or the Watershed Committee of the Ozarks.
