Elk River Basin - Point Source Pollution
Point source pollution in the Elk River Basin comes from many different sources. Factories
and businesses release their wastewater into the streams.
Sewage treatment plants in the basin also release their treated water into
the streams.
Businesses, sewage treatment plants, apartment complexes, and mobile home parks may have permits to
release wastes into rivers in the Elk River Basin.

Permitted Point Source Discharges
In accordance with the Clean Water Act, wastewater treatment plants and industries releasing
point source pollution must have a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES)
permit. These permits specify pollution
limits, monitoring, and reporting requirements of the facilities that are discharging
wastewater. See the table below for a list of
