Fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals, mussels, crayfish, and many plants are found in the Elk River Basin. Threatened and Endangered Plants and Animals
Some aquatic animals are unique to the Ozark-Neosho aquatic community, which includes the Elk River Basin. These include the redspot chub, bluntface shiner, cardinal shiner, southwestern mimic shiner, western slim minnow, Neosho madtom, Arkansas darter, Neosho orangethroat darter, redfin darter, channel darter, yellow mud turtle, Neosho midget crayfish, and Neosho mucket mussel.

Within the Elk River Basin there are four federally endangered species and two federally threatened species.   State agencies also have lists of endangered and threatened species.    See the table below for a list of organisms found within the Elk River Basin that are of conservation concern.
