Elk River Basin - Agriculture Historically, crops such as wheat, corn, oats, rye, tobacco, and buckwheat have been grown in the Elk River Basin. In the 1870s dairy operations were introduced. In addition to dairy cattle, beef cattle, hogs and pigs, sheep, and lamb are raised in the Elk River Basin. In the 1980s, poultry husbandry operations were established and became a multimillion dollar industry that continues to develop rapidly. Fruit industries arrived in the early 1900s, but have declined due to droughts in the 1930s.
